One of my aims for the year is to get my work a little more out there. My first art show of the year is the Fluid show at the Fitzroy Art Galley.
Fluid is group exhibition as part of the Midsumma Festival, that was organised by one of my high school friends Fiona Newton. Fiona is an amazing person who runs the Fitzroy Market, gives productivity seminars and is a sports presenter on Joy FM. I’m not sure there’s anything she wouldn’t excel at. So when she was curating an art exhibition I definitely wanted to support her.
If you don’t know the Midsumma Festival it’s Melbourne’s Queer arts and cultural festival. As part of Midsumma the Fluid showcases queer themed art across painting, photography and sculpture.
I asked Fiona is Dreamcoat was on theme. I feel a little uncomfortable that it’s only queer content is the rainbow. While Dreamcoat was created as an expression of joy, being out of the closet and bringing your inner self out into the world in all it’s vibrant glory, I wasn’t sure how well that was conveyed in the piece. Fiona agreed and although it is larger than they were looking for she asked me to submit an entry.

Now, sadly, I skipped the opening night. My mental health hasn’t been great so the idea of being in a room with people I don’t really know was a little challenging. I’m hoping to build myself up a little more before the closing event.
If you are around Melbourne (particularly Fitzroy) next weekend do stop in to the Fitzroy Public Gallery and have a look at the diverse and gorgeous pieces in the collection. Open Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th from 11am-5pm culminating in a closing party on the 8th from 2-5pm.
